Darnell-Schuber is a 1998 graduate of The Ohio State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.  An Ohio native, Dr. Darnell-Schuber came to San Diego in 1998 to complete her required "on the job" experience for her veterinary medical degree.  After returning home for graduation, she chose San Diego as a final destination.  She says she fell in love with America's finest city during a visit to her brother in the U.S. Navy during a Spring Break vacation.

In Practice since 1998, Dr. Darnell-Schuber gained a large range of valuable experience working in several different environments for 6 years prior to her purchase of the Shelter Island Veterinary Hospital in 2004.  Her areas of special interest include Internal Medicine, Surgery (soft tissue and orthopedics) and Dentistry.  Dr. Darnell-Schuber spends many hours each year in continuing education classes to not only fulfill the state requirements for licensure, but to keep up to date on the latest in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Dr. Darnell-Schuber was married to her wonderful husband Brad in 2008 (which explains the hyphen in her last name!), and they are expecting their first child in August 2010.

They have a very large furry family including 3 dogs and 5 cats.   Their wonderful feline children are  Murphy (15 years), Symon  or "Mr. Siamese - if you please" (8 years), Crouton or "Baby Kitty" a street cat that Dr. Darnell literally saved from the brink of death (now 3 years old) and Helena Handbasket or "Ms. Lena", an affectionately named (although ill-tempered) free-loader who is also a rescued street cat (2 years old).  Their most recent addition is Trinity, a momma kitty who has been shot and seriously wounded while caring for 4 newborn kittens.  Unfortunately, she lost her leg to infection.  However, wonderful homes were found for each of her kittens and Dr. Darnell is currently working on teaching her to trust the human race again and she is turing in to quite a love bug.  They also have 2 dogs as well!! Evie (a 6-year old French Bulldog) and Diesel (a 2-year old French Bulldog) are Shelter Island Vet Hospital's canine goodwill embassadors.

Dr. Darnell volunteers regularly for the Feral Cat Coalition.  This organization provides free spay/neuter service for homeless, stray cats.  She not only volunteers her time, but also allows our hospital to host clinics.  In 2010, there will be 2 clinics held at the hospital to help reduce the stray cat population.

Outside of work, Dr. Darnell-Schuber enjoys many different hobbies including gardening, cooking and scrapbooking.
